How we count genes and variants

We test selected DNA positions in genes and associated regions; this is not whole-gene sequencing. Each named gene is counted once, even when we test multiple variants. A variant ID is counted once across report topics. We do not add extra genes for overlapping annotations or alternate names. The HLA-DQ regional marker is included in the 180 variants, but is not counted as an extra gene.

These totals describe the test's coverage. They are not a count of findings that will be significant for you, and some tested markers may not appear as separate rows in your report.

Can I understand the report on my own?

Yes. Your report is designed for you to read and understand, with plain-English explanations of your genetic findings, visual pathways, and personalized nutrition and lifestyle suggestions. You do not need a practitioner appointment to read your results. If you want extra support, you can choose to share the report with your practitioner. How is The Works different from MaxFunction?

MaxFunction focuses on functional wellness, including methylation, histamine, hormones, antioxidants, and nutrient processing. The Works builds on that foundation with expanded food, nutrition, metabolism, and fitness insights. See the full topic comparison.

What kind of sample do I provide?

A cheek swab collected at home. Your kit includes a swab, sample vial, and step-by-step instructions. Follow the collection instructions supplied in your kit.

Is this a diagnostic or food allergy test?

No. The Works explores genetic tendencies for informational and wellness purposes. It does not diagnose disease, test for food allergies, or measure your current nutrient or hormone levels. Consult a qualified healthcare professional before making medication or treatment changes.

Can I use Shop Pay or my HSA/FSA card?

Shop Pay payment options are displayed beneath the price and at checkout, subject to eligibility and the terms shown by Shop Pay. The Works is HSA/FSA eligible; you can use your HSA or FSA card at checkout.

Is return shipping included?

US orders include a prepaid return label. Canadian and other international orders include instructions for arranging return shipping; a prepaid return label is not included.

What happens to my sample and data?
